HMS Cumberland 1957580 viewsAt the start of WWII, Cumberland was assigned to Force G of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron. In early December 1939 she was forced to carry out a self maintenance period in the Falklands. Without her, HMS's Exeter, Ajax and Achilles engaged the German raider Admiral Graf Spee in the Battle of the River Plate on 13 December. Cumberland moved north to reinforce. Graf Spee had put into neutral Montevideo and was trapped there, as Cumberland along with Ajax and Achilles (Exeter having been heavily damaged) patrolled the estuary resulting in Admiral Graf Spee being scuttled by her crew on 7 December
In the 1956 film Battle of the RIver Plate, Cumberland played herself arriving at speed from the Falklands to replace the damaged Exeter.Prefect
