Taken by the pillbox (cafe) at Tigne Beach - I should have gone a bit further back to get the water in - will try again next year if there's anywhere left to stand on.

the maltese have just ruined Tigne Barracks when i look at all the shots i have growing up there and even later staying at the Crowne Plaza it was not so bad. They love to knock down their heritage. Malta was never meant to be a Hong Kong they should have consentrated on preserving history that is what tourists want. I have not been back for three years . I am hoping to visit this year but i expect all there will be are empty apartment blocks. So sad

They are keeping some of their heritage intact e.g. Mtarfa Hospital pic and links. Verdala is a sympathetic development, but much is decaying like Ricasoli, St Angelo and many of the forgotten minor forts (some now in private hands or with squatters) and crying out for EU grants. In-fighting between Malta Heritage (= Museums Dept), Din L'Art Helwa (= vol org like National Trust) and Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (= another vol org conserving historic sites) doesn't help, political will is lacking (not a vote-winner presumably - or little scope for profit). I was told they have only two years left to spend EU money but haven't confirmed whether this is so.

Anyone else remember exploring the cave underneath? I think it had been an ammo dump during the war; access from waterside facing the harbour entrance.

Yes, see discussion under pic of Marsamxett Ferry on Page 1 of Before our Time. (The flipping system will still not let me post links!)

One aspect of the Tigne development is that the developers have invested some 30 Mill Euros in to the refurbishment of Fort Manoel which I guess is a plus but there again I agree Malta is not Hong Kong and should remain so however the Island does need investment and must go for what they can get!
