I would like to know when that high road bridge linking St Angelo to Birgu was built and subseqently demolished.

Hmm - that cruise ship looks very modern, the odd yacht here & there. Destoyers/frigates. The remaining span to the breakwater gone. The roadway couldn't have been up for long.

Whilst looking to see when the second span came down, found THIS from last week's ToM (see discussion below article). More discussion HERE and HERE and HEREon wasting money that should be spent on roads/social infrastucture.

Well they are but I'm sure they won't mind if I put a link. The 2nd span was still there in 1954. That Angelo bridge still bugs me. I would date this by the frigates to around 1970.

In 1970 the shoreside buildings at St A landing steps were still there, demolished in the 80s/90s (along with the bridge probably?). So the shot is between 1970 and withdrawal of RN in 1979, but we've still no idea when the bridge was built. More clues needed. And why demolish it?

Well they built a monstrous block of flats on the end of Birgu so perhaps it was in the way and no doubt the heritage people considered it non original.

Last year I tried to find the way onto the remaining St A walkway but failed because of the flats. Pity the 'heritage people' can't demolish those - and that hideous eyesore skyscraper at Paceville, you can see it from Gozo and probably from Space. Have we got a picture of it? Just for the record of course.

Back to the bridge. Bonnici & Cassar (p13) state "Access to Fort St Angelo was improved after 1979 by means of a stone viaduct whose foundations were laid in the camber." Must have been very early in 1979!

That's got to be a misprint - we left in 1979. There was no need to improve access then, and St A fell derelict. Maybe 1969? It looks quite new in the pic. Must have been quite a feat building the supports in the Admiral's boating pond.

Reckon so. Though even then we were well into the Naval run down so why bother?

Maybe it was a sweetener for the Malta Govt when we were hoping to extend the lease. It all fell apart a couple of years later when we called Dom's bluff (1973) and refused to cough up what he was asking.

Maybe. It was 72 when the families went home and the school closed for two terms. At one time the camber was apparently open to the public, but not in our time as I recall.

He backed down then and we went back. In 73 the UK press was full of the Nato deal that Dom wanted and we refused to meet. A compromise was reached at a vastly increased rent until 1979 but Dom still wanted a lot more for a longer period. Such a pity he blew it, we would've stayed on longer. He rightly tried his best for the island but..........

But the fact that we were prepared to leave by March 31 1972 before he backed down for the first time, shows that we were not in it for the long term, especially Navy wise having disbanded the Med Fleet in 1967.

Indeed - it was a Nato deal. The UK Social Security budget was already burgeoning. (I was part of it - we layabout students on fat grants were able to sign on the dole during the uni holidays. Marvellous - it paid for my annual trips to Malta).

Does anyone know what is the building instead of today's new modern St.Angelo appartments in this picture? During the British and the Knight's Period?

A plan of HMS St Angelo on page 182 of The Malta Grand Harbour by Bonnici & Cassar shows the buildings on the Birgu side of the Camber to be Stores fronted by a Public Latrine.
