How to get to tunnels (2)
The main steps here behind the sloping wall have been nicely restored. These were the steps opposite the families Naafi shop.

These are by the "swimming pool" in case that's not obvious.

When were these taken Martin?

Hello David, keep meaning to say Hello but not been on the site much til this week when Prefect told me you'd put yours on. I remember you from bus 68 and going down the caves/tunnels. They were taken last year - got lots more - I started with the "Tigne Caves Expedition 2010" shot of the rocks and wondered whether to put them in reverse order, but as P had started with the pool I followed on.

Hello Martin - bus 68?
Martin Powell   [Jun 29, 2011 at 12:35 PM]
Via Tigne Street where I got on. We lived in the new red coloured flats half way down the Tigne side, no.48. Still there but now cream painted to match all the rest, shame.
Prefect   [Jun 29, 2011 at 01:00 PM]
Not wishing to intrude on private conversations but I think it was David's big brother Mike who would have been on Bus 68.
There is something odd about these steps. I'm working on it.
Martin Powell   [Jun 29, 2011 at 01:42 PM]
Thank you DG, Mike it was. As for the steps, I think I know where you're heading - that they're brand new? And that the other set are the Naafi ones? What does David - and Mike - think?
Prefect   [Jun 29, 2011 at 01:54 PM]
Not so much being new as the base seems original, but the drawing of the original fort. showed a pair of parallel stairways . The earliest pic we have here shows a single one in line with the Tower front door, as now. The Maine seems to have them offset to the right, and in the fifties they are blanked off with just a single wall standing?
Martin Powell   [Jun 29, 2011 at 04:47 PM]
The page with the original fort shows a sketch with two side by side but a photo of only one. This has to be the restored one in my shot above this discussion - and my memory wrong. Obviously if going into the caves by the pool takes you up the spiral into the tower it has to be this staircase. The Naafi one must be the one in your other photo - so I had them the wrong way round which is now obvious. Wood and tree syndrome. As for the other refs - war damage? Removed for wartime security? Those concrete (Naafi) ones could be sixties, which would fit in with memory.
