Someone probably took the crest home with them, or maybe it was presented to the CO. More holes on the right from another crest? The resident squadron no doubt.

Hmm - strange they're all so identical in size and colour and on the same irregular bits of wood - more like a repro job lot maybe? Interesting though.

No they are all regular shield shapes in the museum but I had to mess about with them to get them fitted on one page!

Even so they are all uniform and look like the painted or transfer-printed ones that pop up on ebay now and then. You can also buy the proper carved wood or plaster-moulded ones on the internet. How big are the ones in the museum? Did they look authentic or repro? We'll have to work out the original sizes from the holes on the board!

Standard shields about 7 inches long. They looked authentic and I think moulded though they are from different periods as the bottom row have the "King's Crown". Not sure what happens in the RAF but in the RFA/Navy, ships are supplied with a mould to make their own which results in variable quality depending on the skills of the Chippy and whoever gets the job of painting them!
Being renowned for extravagance, perhaps the RAF went in for mass production.
